Unalome Therapy Dunedin is more of an experiment than a business; I don’t have a name for what I am trying to create. I love technology used well and there is a lot I see where the damage in our society is amplified by technology which I do not want to be a part of. My youth has spanned the development of these technology tools. I learnt touch typing on a typewriter with a material cover over my fingers- I know that sounds crazy!
Then experienced the first chat rooms, clunky websites with hardly any images and they took forever to load. You had to be far more patient to use technology tools than just use pen and paper or read a book, we hand wrote our essays at university and posted them into a locked box to hand them in- it was wild. I was a young teacher when we first got laptops as professionals to write reports and I knew how to ‘cut and paste’ so I got put in charge of teaching everyone to use these new tools.
I got to experience the development of this technology and some of the beautiful potential of what it was in the beginning, of open source and creative commons spaces; it was so exciting. People were free to connect across time and space around creative ideas with other people with similar interest even if in their own communities they felt isolated. Obviously, some people were connecting around distorted and harmful content and now the algorithm has a hold of it all.
I really loved blogging in the early 2000s, it was wonderful to read content that everyday people wrote about their lives and what they loved. At the time this was really unique, anything printed came from professionals, reporters, people with the job to create content. To create something for an audience without permission and for people to be able to find the content of everyday people was amazing- there were also a lot of pictures of cats.
I love writing and using images to share ideas and vibes. I like the challenge of communicating in bites and letting an image speak but I also see that so much of what is forced in front of people’s faces now is shallow, brief, summarised and that meaning is slap in the face obvious. Content feels increasingly for show and it lacks personal voice especially when it was written by AI.
I am writing this blog for myself, it helps me remember all my creative projects. I hope it is a beacon of authenticity and gives my audience some support for doing growth in messy and real ways, having fun, making it up as your go along and seeing what happens. I will be writing about my work indirectly; only by explaining how my lived experiences link to holistic healing concepts. There is a lot of confused messaging in our world, messed up and mixed ideas and worldviews. A lot of content creators and those with the power to broadcast online and pay for changes they want or to hold structures that have benefited them are demanding and buying our attention. I am not confused, I am already in a new world- which is also our ancient world, one of balance, reciprocality, reverence and authenticity. It is holistic and holds multiple truths all at once.
If you had non-stop healing sessions, overtime you wouldn’t see progress; the healing is in our lives, we have to take it off the table- that is integration, that is growing into the true you. I hope these musing help make that truth a bit easier to understand and do in your own delightful way.
